The Motif Chamber Ensemble made its successful debut at the Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay on the 16th and 17th of August, performing Haydn Symphony Nr. 104 and Kongmeng Liew’s Paper Crane (world premiere).
Conducting a mixed amateur-semi-pro orchestra was a challenge for me as I have always been working with conservatoire students and semi-pro or pro orchestras. However, it was a great conducting lesson as I discover the challenges an amateur orchestra face eg. intonation, temperament, lack of pulse etc. and learnt a lot about rehearsing techniques as I worked with the orchestra to tackle the problems aforementioned. It was also a great chance to work with a soloist during Kongmeng Liew’s Paper Crane (which featured a solo violin), as we explore different tuning systems, timbre, improvisation and cadenza(s).
I would like to thank the team behind TJC MOTIF V for inviting me to conduct and perform with the MotifCE, and my wonderful players for putting in so many hours of rehearsal during the last couple of weeks. I hope to conduct you guys again next summer!
